Our first ride of the year is in the books and it was a great success.
There were 66 registered riders in Taber Alberta on August 6th. The local organizing committee, headed by Christine West, did a great job organizing a pancake breakfast, lunch on the trail and beef on a bun for dinner. They had a huge selection of door prizes and great prizes for the silent and live auctions.
In total, the event raised over $34,000! A huge thank you to all the participants, volunteers and sponsors. Congratulations to Isabel Jans from Medicine Hat who won the 2016 Taber saddle.
This is the 8th year for the Alberta Wish Ride, founded by Irene White and Roger Matas. Their charity of choice is the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada which grants wishes to seriously and terminally ill children in order to bring some joy into the lives of the children and their families at a very difficult time. Roger and Irene chose to support Children's Wish because of the organization's low administration costs. The rides have always operated on a minimal cost basis while providing a first class experience for the riders. Costs to host the event are offset by support from community individuals and companies.
In 2015 for example, the events hosted the riders, provided breakfast, a snack on the trail and a hot meal, had huge silent auctions, prizes and entertainment, all at a cost of about $200. That's why, over the past seven years, they have been able to donate over $300,000 to the Children's Wish Foundation.
